Regulations that affect
your project
The City
of Pittsburgh Historic Review Commission (HRC) must review and
approve all exterior alterations to buildings in the City Historic
District. This includes signage, demolitions, new construction,
and additions. Even projects funded in part by South Side Local
Development Company (SSLDC) or the Urban Redevelopment Authority
must also be approved by the HRC.
Getting approved
Business and property owners planning any alterations should contact
the HRC at (412) 255-2243 and SSLDC at (412) 481-0651. Here’s
how the approval process works:
- You are strongly encouraged to present projects to SSLDC’s
Design Committee for initial direction and feedback. If you are
applying for public loans or grants, the committee’s review
is required. The committee can help you solve any potential issues
early in the design process and the HRC looks for the SSLCD Committee's
recommendation in granting their approval.
- You must submit a work application to the HRC. The HRC staff
is authorized to approve certain projects. Such projects will
be reviewed promptly and, if approved, issued a Certificate of
Appropriateness by HRC Staff.
- All other projects will be reviewed by the HRC’s Local
Review Committee (LRC), and then by the HRC at its monthly public
hearing a week later.
- The HRC’s public hearings are held the first Friday of
every month. The LRC meetings are held one week prior to the HRC
hearings. To be on the HRC public hearing agenda, submit your
application to the HRC by the end of the day on Friday, two weeks
prior to the hearing.
