Historic Designations on the South Side

  • In 1983, South Side’s East Carson Street was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • A decade later, in 1993, East Carson Street was designated as a City Historic District.
  • In 1996, East Carson Street was named a “Great American Main Street” by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

So what do these designations mean to business and property owners? The charm of the historic district attracts people to South Side. To protect the historic fabric, the city enforces strict design guidelines for exterior renovations within the historic district.

The guidelines protect the historic district from substandard façade alterations and nonconforming new construction. The end result is a charming historic business district where your investment is safeguarded.
