Volunteer Opportunities

SSLDC is always seeking residents and professionals who want to make an impact in their neighborhood. Whether you want to volunteer at a special event or join a committee, there are a number of opportunities to roll up your sleeves and get involved! Below is a list of events and committees that can use your help. To learn more about these opportunities, contact us at (412) 481-0651.

PNC Historic South Side Home Tour
The PNC Historic South Side Home Tour is held the first Saturday in June each year. Volunteers are positioned in the tour homes to direct visitors from room to room and answer questions. Volunteers attend a morning orientation, work either a morning or afternoon shift (your choice), and may take the tour free of charge during the opposite shift. This is a great way to volunteer with a friend and also see some really great South Side homes!

Those interested in helping plan the Home Tour may join the tour committee, which meets from October through June. An interest in event planning, marketing, sponsorship sales, interior design, or architecture is helpful.

Business Development Committee

The Business Development Committee works to ensure that a healthy mix of professional, retail, and restaurant businesses exists in the South Side business district. Some of the committee's priorities include implementing a comprehensive streetscape improvement plan, developing the Carson Street corridor between 10th and 1st streets (known as 10 to 1), and maintaining a thriving business district that complements the South Side Works development.

Design Committee
The SSLDC Design Committee reviews proposed commercial and residential construction, demolition, and façade improvement projects in the South Side Flats and especially within Local Historic District boundaries. The committee also oversees locally the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s Streetface Improvement program and the South Side Sign Grant program. An interest in the architecture and history of the South Side and a background in urban design or construction are desired.

Fundraising Committee

South Side Local Development Company's work is made possible by the generosity of many grantmakers, in-kind supporters, sponsors, local business owners, and individuals. The Fundraising Committee works to garner the financial support of these supporters, focusing its efforts on an annual grassroots fundraising campaign that targets local businesses and individuals and on a broader solicitation of appropriate foundations and corporations. Experience in fund development is desired of prospective committee members.

Promotions Committee
Made up of business owners and marketing, public relations, and event management professionals, the committee’s charge is to create a demand for South Side as a place for entertainment, shopping, dining, and doing business. Committee members assist staff in planning various promotions that showcase the neighborhood.

Real Estate Committee
Innovators with a vision for a revitalized South Side make up this committee, which undertakes both commercial and residential real estate projects on the South Side. In addition to traditional construction projects and adaptive reuse, the committee hopes to increase the demand for housing through marketing, homebuyer education, market research, and employer-assisted housing programs. Experience in building trades or real estate is desired, as participation requires thoughtful consideration and attention to details.
