Legacy

Access to the South Side Local Development Company’s 30 years of maps, photographs, land redevelopment plans, public space studies, special events records, and much, much more will be available to the public by September 2012. The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s South Side Branch has generously agreed to house these archives in a new collection that will be located in the newly renovated branch at 2205 East Carson Street. Access to these archives will be available upon request to the Library Branch Manager. We hope that you will take advantage of this great collection which documents the history of development in the South Side over the past 30 years.

South Side Planning Forum

The Forum consists of representatives from the following 4 voting member organizations, to address major neighborhood issues and events.

• South Side Community Council:

  The residential community of South Side Flats is represented by the South Side Community Council of Pittsburgh, Inc., a non-profit community-based advocacy organization. The Council is led by a Board of Directors which is elected by the general membership. The Community Council addresses a full range of concerns including housing, zoning, infrastructure improvements, and public safety. The Council also maintains good working relationships with city and state government, service providers, the business community, and other organizations serving the Flats. The South Side Community Council has been in existence since the early 1960's. http://south-side-pittsburgh.com/community-council/

• South Side Chamber of Commerce:

  The business community is represented by the South Side Chamber of Commerce which is governed by a policy-making Board of Directors of up to 25 members elected by the membership every year. Officers are elected by the Board every other October. Directors guide programs through various standing and numerous ad hoc committees, including Promotions, Membership and Networking. http://www.southsidechamber.org/

• South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association:

  The South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association (SSSNA) is a community based advocacy organization whose mission is to maintain, foster and improve the quality of life, safety and unity of the Slopes neighborhood. An 11 member Board of Directors (including 4 board officers) is elected by the membership each October. SSSNA serves through the following committees: Beautification, Cleanup and Safety, Elm Street, Finance and Development, Housing and Zoning, Outreach and Step Trek. http://www.southsideslopes.org

• Brashear Association:

  Founded as a settlement house in 1917, the Brashear Association, Inc. is the oldest community service organization in South Side. The Association provides a wide range of human services to residents of several South Pittsburgh neighborhoods. The agency has also been active in the development of residential leadership and community organizations and in the coordination of neighborhood development activities. Brashear operates two multi-purpose community centers, Brashear Center at 2005 Sarah Street and Henry Kaufmann Neighborhood House at 2201 Salisbury Street; an outreach office in the St. Clair Village; and the Neighborhood Employment Center in Allentown. Current services offered by Brashear and its partner organizations include: Head Start; family self sufficiency services; educational enrichment programs for children; food assistance programs; senior citizen services; adult day care; support groups for several populations; stroke rehabilitation groups; outreach programs; and technical assistance to community groups. PURPOSE: The Development Review Committee serves the South Side Planning Forum as a watchdog for appropriate land and construction development projects in the South Side. The Development Review Committee applies all relevant design guidelines, site plans and neighborhood policy documents to the review process. A merger of the LTV Steering Committee and the SSLDC Design Committee, the Development Review Committee reviews projects within the East Carson Street Historic District and the former LTV site (including the South Side Works), and can review any project in the South Side Flats or South Side Slopes. Developers who seek development review may include those who also seek Historic Review Commission, Zoning Board of Adjustment, Art Commission and Planning Commission support letters, or general consultation. Unless referred by the City, developers’ attendance to the Development Review Committee is appreciated as a voluntary, goodwill step in the municipal approvals process.

The South Side Planning Forum also anticipates the formation of a Parks and Greenspace Committee:

PURPOSE: To maintain lines of communication among various stakeholders involved in the maintenance and improvement of South Side’s green spaces (i.e., South Side Park, South Side Riverfront Park, Armstrong Playground, Ormsby Recreation Center) and to ensure that any projects/improvements/proposals related to South Side’s green spaces are in keeping with plans and studies included as appendices to the South Side Neighborhood Plan (i.e., South Side Park Greenspace Management Plan).
